In this chapter, we learn that the perfumer's daughter, Safia, has been cheated out of the top prize in the Fragrance Competition by her supervisor, Madame de Guiche. We learn that Madame Guiche's supervisor, Monsieur de Bois-Guiche, has also been involved in the cheating.
