In this chapter, we are introduced to a new character named Qiao-yu, who has just returned from a trip to China. He is very upset to learn that his lover, Lin-Chee, has decided to go public with his affair with Madame Bovary. He tells his friend that he will not be able to continue his acting career if he does not reveal his true feelings for her. He also tells her that if she does reveal her love for Bovary, she will lose her "important part of herself" .
