The chapter opens with a conversation between Ming and Queaning, in which Ming tells his friend that he is jealous of the rich man's attentions to his nephew. He tells him that he has been kicked out of the dorm and that he must stay with Ming for the night. When Ming asks if he is angry, he replies that he did it because he wants to know what his friend is thinking. He then shows Ming all of his money, which he has invested in the bar. He also shows Ming the necklace that he gave him as a gift. Ming asks what he is going to do now that he knows his friend's feelings for his nephew have been hurt
