This chapter opens with a discussion between the Governess and her adopted daughter. The Governess asks the daughter why she wants to leave the family. The daughter explains that she is an adopted daughter and that she will no longer be allowed to live with the family after she leaves. The girl is upset that the Governress is trying to make fun of her, and she begs the daughter to help her escape from the family
