About This Chapter
In this short scene, the protagonist and his friends discuss their love for one another. The protagonist tells his friend that he would love to be with Wushe, but that he has a date with her that night, so he is afraid she will be jealous. He tells her that he knows there is no true friendship between girls, and that she is in love with a man. He says that she saved the man twice, but he was always a nice girl. He then tells the protagonist that he is not the only person who wants to kill her. He explains that he was born a little wimp, and now he is here to get himself, and he will kill him. He also says that he will raise the man's bounty the next day. He asks the protagonist to go watch the play, but the protagonist refuses, saying that his parents do not want him to return to the dance halls. He goes on to say that the protagonist is not qualified to be the leader of the gang, because he is a "poor and dirty chick" who should go back to her slum.
