In this chapter, we learn that the gang leader of the nightowls is a "rare remaining fan" of the Underground Man. The Underground Man is shocked by this news, but he is also happy that he has found a way to extract nightsky from his clothes. He is also pleased that he does not know any other gang leaders, and he remembers every lyric he wrote in the past that could never get close to him in the future. He wonders when he said he loved her, and wonders if this is the case on the stage or in the movies. He also wonders if the leader will regard his idols' words as confession, and will regard them as stalking fans.
