The chapter opens with Isabella asking her husband if he has any idea who has committed the crime. He says that he has no idea, but he does have an idea. He tells her that his daughter, named in the will, is not old enough to inherit his property. He leaves her to her maid, martha, who will be the sole trustee of his estate upon his death. Isabella says that she is sorry, but she does not know what she was expecting. She says that it is clear that he left everything to his daughter and that he intended for her to assume the role of Donna when she was older. She asks her husband to help her find her daughter.
