In this chapter, we learn that the butler, budiman, has been hired to look after Lady deya, a ten-year-old girl who has been orphaned by her father's death. The butler tells the girl's mother, Milady, that he has come to take care of her because the family has already paid all of her debts. Milady asks the butler if he is sure that he will be reliable, and the butler replies that he always remembers that she always ran away from him when he tried to get a rent payment. He also says that he originally planned to chase her out of the house, but since the rent payment has already been made, he has decided to stay and look after her
