About This Chapter
Rina tells Roxane that he's not afraid of the guards, because they've just cleaned up the cell. He's also glad that she's here, because she makes him feel less scared. Roxane asks Rina if he regrets saving her, and Roxane replies that he does, because he saved her from a terrible situation. He also says that he plans to get along with Rina's father, who's still in prison, when he meets him again. He asks Roxane if she thinks that lark misunderstood them, and she says that she doesn't think lark meant to say that his daughter is pregnant. She says that her father's daughter is arrogant, and that she has rejected many suitors. She's pregnant, she says, because her legs are too short. She hates children, especially when they're cold and arrogant like lark. When Roxane mentions that a gardener used to bring her fresh roses every day, Roxane thinks that the gardener is dead. He was a hated man, and no one would accept him in the family. He carved a rose in the wall of the cell, and it made him sad. He says that the only happiness he has is meeting Roxane every day.
