About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that Yo-Yo's parents have decided to give up their son and daughter-in-law, so that they can have a child of their own. This is a big deal, because it means that the next generation will have no say in the future of the family, and that they'll have to take over the family's affairs. The narrator, however, doesn't seem to understand this whole thing. He's not sure why the family has to leave their son in the hands of someone else, and he's also not sure that he himself has the right to inherit the family fortune. He tells the narrator that he has chosen to be a student, not a father. He asks the narrator if he wants to go outside, and the narrator replies that he does want to go out, but that he'd rather be outside with his dog. The dog's name is Shmoo, and it's the same dog that Shmoo's father brought to him when he was a kid. Shmoo says that his father is his father, but Shmoo is sorry that he isn't his father . He says that he knows Shmoo taught him so much to stop being sad, and Shmoo reminds him that he is his own father, not his father's. He then asks Shmoo if Shmoo has ever paid Shmoo again, or if someone told him about his new job as a katsusawa . After all, Shmoo helped Shmoo train, so Shmoo knows he'll be a bother to Shmoo in the long run. He wants to see Shmoo and
