About This Chapter
The next morning, the Governess is helping with some cleaning at the house when she hears a voice outside. The Governess asks the servant if he thinks the man will stop coming to the house because of the cold. The servant replies that he doesn't think so. He tells her that he's not on duty that day, but he'll take her up on it later. When she asks where she's going, the servant tells her to go to her house. He asks her where she is, and she tells him that she found her looks like they didn't need a friend. She says that the police officer gave them directions after all, and that it wasn't her fault that the girl was passing by. She apologizes for being so mad, and says that it is okay for her to be mad. She tells the servant that she was worried about the girl because she loves the girl, but that love isn't the same thing as being in love. He says that they'll figure out the problem at a later date. He goes on to say that she has been shut up inside her house for 10 years and can't swim. He's worried that she'll drown, but she says that she needs to do something to get out of the water. She asks him to borrow a lantern so she can go back to the river. He agrees, and he goes to bring the lantern to the rescue. He thinks it's a relief that she survived the river, because she was so shocked by it that she couldn't figure out how to swim. She needs a heart, he says, but what she needs is a heart. He leaves for Germany the next day, so he needs her to stay in the house.
