The chapter opens with a description of a shrine on top of a mountain. Everyone is gathered there, except for Udolpho, who is trying to escape the reality of her family's new rules. The narrator tells us that the shrine is meant to be a place where people gather to "scare" one another. Everyone has agreed that this is the new family rule, and everyone is looking for "a good scare" . Everyone's looking for a "good scare" because Udolph's sister, Suzu, has arrived at the shrine. Suzu's dad, Tomoyuki, has been looking for her, but he can't find her either. He's worried that she's going to run away with her brother and sister-in-law, but Suzu reminds him that he's always been there to protect them, even when they've rebelled against him. He tells Suzu that he still wants to be her "part of her life" , even though he doesn't want her to "just run away" after causing her so much pain. He asks Suzu what she wishes for, and she says that she wishes she had someone else to help her deal with her problems.
