About This Chapter
"Give me a name" is the first line of the story, which begins with the narrator's declaration that everyone is blessed with a "name," an identity that will last until the person's death. The narrator wonders why he is the only person in the world without a name. He wonders what purpose he serves, and where he should be. He asks his mother to give him a name, but she refuses, saying that he is still taking care of his health. He begs her to help him find a name so that he can reveal his true identity to the world. She steps forward, and the narrator asks her to "purl thump thump give" him a new name. She does so, and then she steps back, and suddenly the narrator realizes that she is being scared by him. He realizes that he does not deserve to be called a "ghost." He wonders if he was born with a purpose in mind, and thus needs a name; thus, he asks, "i need a name." The narrator then wonders if it is because he is a "hollow shell" , or if he is just observing the "light come and go" for eternity. He then asks if he can return the doll to the girl, and if she is here, he wonders, "dam honk honk.00 . . is she here." He then wonders why there is a ghost in the hospital, and wonders if the ghost is the spirit of the patient who died there, or perhaps it is the "evil spirit" of a patient. He decides to search for the girl now, and to continue the story.
