About This Chapter
The Governess is in the middle of bathing when she hears the sound of someone's footsteps and realizes that it is someone she has just met. She asks the Governess if she can read out the scene's dialogue for her so she can practice her lines. She realizes that she is an outsider in the world of the play and that she does not know the story well enough to be able to understand the dialogue. She wants to practice the dialogue so that she can understand what is going on in the scene. She is afraid that the man in the mirror will think she is in love with him and will kiss and stuff her with someone else. She wonders if the man will act the same way with other people. She feels that she cannot move even if the scene were to be acted out in front of her. She also wonders if anyone would come to love the man if it were not for the fact that he is a teacher. She tells him that she wants to hear his own feelings and not his teacher's.
