The scene opens with a flashback to the beginning of the novel, in which Viola and Viola's relationship is described. Viola is returning from a trip to Europe, where she met a woman named Julka, who told her that Julka is going out with Viola. Viola tells Julka that she and Julka have already broken up, and that Julk should talk to Julka about it. Julka tells Viola that she thinks they've broken up because they haven't spoken to each other properly, and Viola tells her to ignore Julka. Viola says that she doesn't think they're breaking up because of her, but because of the way Julka and Viola have treated each other. Viola asks Julka not to use the word "separation" on her, and she tells her not to worry about it anymore.
