Chapter 41 opens with a soliloquy by Bilinas, in which she explains that she has come to the school only to "piss off" her teachers. She explains that the first thing they must learn is to identify the elementals floating in the air, fire water, light wind, earth connection, fire light intuition, earth hum, wind elementals. She says that she hasn't been bored in a long time, and that she's finally tired of the class. She tells the teacher that he's being rude to her by forcing her to memorize the textbook. The teacher is annoyed, and he tells her that if she can't show him the answers to the questions, he'll have her copy the textbook over and over again. He also says that there are some elementals that aren't compatible with the school's curriculum, like fire water and wind. He says that the progress may not be as fast as he'd like it to be, but the chance of success is high, and this will save him time to cast a spell, and thus prove his method feasible. He's annoyed, but he says that he needs a moment to himself to think about it. He tells himself that the teacher is pushing him, and now he can sit down and think.
