About This Chapter
This chapter's epigraph comes from the play's opening soliloquy, in which we learn that the witches of the play are trying to trick the Duke of Aquitaine. They're trying to get him to kill the witches, but he doesn't want to do it, because he's afraid that they'll kill him. He's also afraid that if he kills them, he'll have to pay back the money he owes the witches. The witches are convinced that if the Duke forgives them, they will be saved, and they're going to kill all the witches anyway. The Duke says that they can talk about this later, but first he wants to know what's going on. He tells the witches that they heard a noise, and that they should hurry up and get rid of all their weapons. He also wants them to drop all of their weapons so that the Duke can have a long spoon to eat with. He says that if they don't do this, the Duke will have to have one for dinner that evening. He asks the witches what they want him to do, and she says that she wants him to release all of the rebels who were recently captured. She also says that the land-grave of Tulkinghorn wouldn't be
