In the courtyard of Damietta, Thibault tells the Archbishop that the Cardinal is still alive and that he has spoken with the ghost of the Virgin Mary. The apparition has revealed to him the will of God, but the Cardinal has turned into a monster in the courtyard. The Archbishop says that he does not understand why the Cardinal and the other men have been corrupted by the devil. He says that they have not been strong enough to carry out God's will. He adds that he will reveal everything in due course.
