About This Chapter
In this chapter, Bardolph continues his conversation with Evans. He tells Evans that he has already given his orders, and that he will ensure that no one follows them. Evans asks how he was able to get to the tomb, and Bardolph tells him that they have protected the tomb for thousands of years. Evans is sorry that Bardolph's father died in the fire, and he asks Evans if he can help him in reviving Rabbi Elisha. Evans says that he is glad that they caught up with him, because the swamp is a popular place. Evans tells Bardolph that they can catch up with the temple dogs, but that he cannot fight them because he cannot see their weapons. He says that god knows he is a fool until he dies. Evans thanks Bardolph for allowing him to get so far, but he says that the game has now gone on for too long. They have been trying to create a new army of obedient, emotionless demons, but they have been unable to do so for so long. Evans invites Evans to join him in communion with the blood of the hermes, the liquid mirror in which he reflects the world.
