About This Chapter
"Time to turn back" , says Ganymede. He's been waiting for the time when he can turn back, but now that Elisha is dead, it's too late. He says he's mixed the clay from the tomb of the dead woman with some of the clay that he brought from Alexandria, but he can't do anything with it. He tells Elisha to accept her death, but she won't let him do that. She's dead, she says, and she's the one who's left the clay in the tomb. She says that if someone had been burning before her eyes, she'd have been more convinced of her death. She tells him to tell the men in the audience that one of their knights has come to the tomb and wants to know where the tomb is. They're going to ask him to help them. Elisha says that he'll be glad to help, but that he needs to be alone with the man. He doesn't want to get into a fight with him, he says, because that would be "a mortal sin" . But he also says that they should be careful not to get too close to each other, because they're not easy men to get along with. He asks if they can have a truce to their little game, so that he can talk to the other man alone.
