The Governess tells her servant that she is the Governess's new secretary and that she has something important to tell him. She tells him that she wants to break off their engagement. He tells her that it was recently announced in the public that they were engaged. She says that she will take responsibility for breaking the engagement and that he will not have to forgive her. He says that if they broke off what would his father say, she would not care what he would say. She is sick of living her life with her father deciding everything for her. She wants to have the one person she loves at her side and she tells him how selfish he is for breaking up their engagement
