About This Chapter
This chapter's epigraph comes from a conversation between the Governess and Damien. The Governess tells Damien that he's the only one who can help him out in the field. He asks Damien to sit down and chat with him. Damien doesn't seem to want to talk to him, but he does want to know what's going on at the school for vampires. He's a little worried that Damien is trying to insult him, so he tells him to come over to the balcony and chat. He also tells him that there's no fault in the world, no earthquakes, no volcanoes, no different continents, and no islands. He says he'll tell Damien what he wants to know, but Damien won't listen to him. He tells him about how Damien's beloved headmaster picked a "mortal" to be trained as a student at the university. Damen is all, "oh, that's disgusting." Damien asks him what he really needs to know about the afterlife, purgatory, and hell. He wants to find out where he can get food, clothes, and fabrics to make his own clothes. This is the assignment Damien has been assigned by the schoolmaster. He has to find his brother, Adrien, who's running around like a crazy man.
