About This Chapter
This chapter's epigraph comes from a famous line in the play The Merchant of Venice. It's a quote from the play's title character, who says something like, "I'm not sure what I'm going to do with my life, but I'll do what I can to help the poor and the needy." Translation: I want to help poor people and needy people. This is a pretty famous quote, but it's also one of the most famous lines in all of Shakespeare's plays. It was written by a famous poet, Henry IV, Part I, Scene 1 . In this passage, the poet says that he's going to try to help people in need, but he'll only do it if he can do it in a way that's good for the poor. He'll try to do this by making sure that they have food, water, and shelter, and that they don't have to work very hard to get there.
