Back at the castle, Deryn is worried about the lack of oxygen in the water. She's also worried about her clothes, which have been burned by the fire. She tells him to take them somewhere safe, because if they fall into the hands of the emperor, the world's going to end. She also tells him that he's an idiot, because he remembers his grandmothers' grandmothers being born the day before. He tells her not to worry, because they're going to find a way to get food and water to the castle. He also tells her that they heard her take a shot from a cannon, but he wasn't hurt. He says he'll spare Deryn the rest of his armor, since he doesn't know why he was sent to the water in the first place.
