In this chapter, we learn that the ghost sweeper, named Nemo, has been invited to Lucio's house by the duke of Abergavenny. The duke wants to know if he can approach Lucio as long as he is with her. The ghost sweeper tells the duke that he is not a ghost, but a human being who has been separated from the other living beings by a device called a "scale gauze" . The key to the room is in the key, and the key says that one of the bodies is possessed by an "evil spirit." The key also says that it could be anyone of them. The two men are shocked to learn that they have been separated. They wonder if the evil spirit might have been trying to drag them in alone, but Nemo says that he has no idea why the duke would want to separate them. He says that the evil spirits might have wanted to drag Lucio in alone but the "mechanism" would not have been there. He then asks the other men to pick up the key and take it to the monitor room.
