In this chapter, we learn that the duke's ghost sweepers are still in the building. Anna, the niece of the duke, tells us that her uncle, the duke , has been holding auctions of art works by evil spirits. Half of the proceeds go to the ghosts, and the other half goes to the poor. Anna and her uncle have to figure out how to get to the other side of the building, where they can find the key. They find a lock box with a bunch of numbers on it, and they wonder if they'll be able to guess the sequence of the numbers on the paintings. They also find some zodiac signs on the lock box, which they can use to guess which month the numbers belong to. They figure out that they can guess the numbers by looking at what the signs look like. They're not sure what's going on, but they're pretty sure that it's evil spirits who've come to kill them. Anna says that she's a ghost sweeper who's been invited to help the duke.
