In this chapter, we learn that the magical creature has gone to investigate the disappearance of the Hostess. When she returns home, she finds that the Hostess has left a red cake on the doorstep. The Hostess tries to explain that she left the cake in order to heal a small wound on her hand, but the creature refuses to believe her. He tells her that he has been able to heal wounds and plants on the island since he was a young child, and that he will not be able to do so again if he is away for more than a day.
