In this chapter, we are introduced to a number of characters who are introduced for the first time in the novel. We learn that Hiroshi and his sister, Teta, are farmers, and that Teta is the sister of Hiroshi's father. Teta and her sister have been growing vegetables for the past few years, and Teta tells us that she is very grateful for the bounty of the land. She tells the group that she has learned to navigate the town by asking for directions, and she hopes that they will be able to share their bounty with the others. She also tells them that she will be returning the favor by sharing some of her vegetables with them.
