About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a description of the destruction of civilization in the Second World War. The narrator tells us that he was looking for a book about this event. He asks the narrator's wife, Sue, to give him the book. Sue tells him that the book is incredibly detailed and that it's just what he's been looking for. He also tells the narrator that he has a customer at his shop who loves history. Sue says that they're getting along quite well, and that she'd like to invite him to the subway someday. Sue asks if he can see her, and the narrator says that he can. He says that ghosts don't harm people on either side of the conflict. He tells Sue that he came to see a strange ghost in a park, and there was a dead body on the spot. He thought he would have another twenty dead, but the people on the side he was fighting convinced him to rest there and let his soul heal. Sue thanks him for coming to see the dead body, and he tells her that he keeps seeing the ghosts on the news. He keeps thinking about how different the world is from the real world, and wonders if he could make it there.
