About This Chapter
In this chapter, the young protagonist is introduced to the world of seaweed and its uses as a food source for magical powers. The protagonist's aunt, the "auntie," takes him to a seaside market in order to buy seaweed and other dried foods. She tells him that he can use the dried foods to conjure up "charcoal geckos" or "spider legs" . The young protagonist also learns that "witches in stories" often use dried foods as ingredients for their magic. He asks his aunt to take him to the festival where they are helping to build a float, and she agrees to do so. She also invites him to come back later to pick up his sister, who is late for the festival.
