About This Chapter
The narrator explains that he never knew his father very well, and that he only saw him occasionally. The narrator says that his father was a "rebellious spirit" that made him want to be an "artisan" rather than a "commoner" . He asks the narrator to explain how his father killed his mother, and the narrator says he is the one who is put out in this whole thing. He says that he will leave for one hour to explain. He tells the narrator that he has some assets he would like to inherit, and he asks him if he remembers his father. He adds that he does not want to make any enemies, but that he is not interested in "making any enemies." The narrator tells the story of how his mother was attacked on her way back from a massage. The man in the coat was killed, and she was left with a broken leg. She had gone to visit a run-down massage parlor, and when she returned home, she was found with the man in her coat. She was attacked by a mugging, and her leg was broken, but she could not have killed the attacker because the suspect was thought to be a male. She narrowly escaped from the suspect pool, too, and because she was outside the murderer's circle, she did not have a chance to kill the attacker. She says that her brother came to her with a plan, and now the future is doomed. She asks him to help her create an alibi for the murder of her mother, but he says it would be better to just stay away from it. She tells him that she hates her brother, and despite that, when he ran he was "the group" , "better at it than I was ." She asks if she was not planning to kill her mother 23 years ago. The timing of her leg breaking is too perfect, she says, and it would take "a lot of commitment," but it is not impossible. They know that the murderer was a male because of her last words, and perhaps she pretended it would not be too risky, and shouted from beside her body so that people would think she was male. They also know that if a murder involves killing someone, the murderer would cover her mouth at the moment of the murder, and they would not leave her side until they thought she was dead. They say that the murder was an "unplanned murder" committed by a "mugger" who had never met sumi-san before . The
