About This Chapter
The narrator apologizes for being late. He's been out of the loop for two years, and he knows that the narrator is busy running his business. He asks the narrator to meet him at lunch. The narrator doesn't know what to say, but he tells the narrator that his mom's "esteemed brother" is the heiress to the Iwanaga fortune, and that she has a lot of strange things going on with her. He wants to know if there's a way to find out what's going on, but the narrator says that he's not interested in joining a detective agency. He also says that his mother was a member of a mystery club when he was president of the club, but she's no longer a part of it. A friend of the narrator's came to him with a problem and asked if the mystery club could solve it. The problem was that one of his friends was sick and couldn't go to bed. The mystery club is supposed to solve weird things, but it's hard to define what weird things are when you're expecting them to happen. So the narrator suggests that the friend explain that his friend is sick and needs to stay home because he went to a "haunted building" . That way, no one will think the club is a "weirdo club" when they find out that the girl went to the haunted building. Also, the girl wouldn't be afraid to tell her friends that she was sick because they'd be more likely to think she was a witch than a real person. So she could go back to school and be all "okay" , and no one would think she'd been in a haunted building and be scared of her. But then she could tell the friend that she had been sick and needed to be home. The friend would be more inclined to trust the school to keep her secret, and then he would be less likely to ask questions about the girl's health when he found out that her friend was back at school. So it sounds like the girl isn't really into the idea of being a witch, and the narrator thinks that's probably why she stayed home from school in the first place. He says that if the girl had been in love with the narrator at the beginning, she would have known that the club would solve the problem. But if she was still in love, then she would be cold to the man she loves, and it would be hard to
