The chapter opens with a flashback to two years ago, when the protagonist was a student at the university. The protagonist, kotoko, is in the middle of a conversation with iwanaga, a patient at the hospital where he works, when he is interrupted by the protagonist's nurse, saki. saki is the nurse who has been accompanying the protagonist on his visits to the hospital for the past two years, and she is the one who has broken off the relationship with the protagonist. When the protagonist asks saki why she has broken up with him, she tells him that she has been with him since high school, and they have been together ever since. She says that when she graduated from college, the protagonist decided that he would have to go to saki's friend, kuro-sakuragawa, whom he had met in high school. He has been visiting the hospital ever since, and saki has been joining him. She seems to be possessive of him, and the protagonist thinks that she is breaking up with his friend because she has no chance of winning him back. He tells saki that he has a crush on her, and that he is waiting for her to remember him. He says that two years have passed since the last time they had a romantic relationship, and he is not ready for another one. . he says that he feels sorry for the protagonist, because he did not know that he was the kind of man who would run away from a woman. He explains that he knows of a fifth-grader who went missing, and who was discovered one week later, with her leg severed and her eye removed. He had been the "god of wisdom" to the girl, and since then, he has been the victim of "another clack-clack clack - clack glance-caution" . He asks the protagonist not to tell him that some " scoundrel" has taken his left eye, but that he still has "scares of attachment" to this world. He adds that he will treat the protagonist if he marries her, but if she does not, then he will show her a real fight, and erase all of her doubts.
