The scene opens with a flashback to the events of the previous chapter, which took place in the palace of King Lear. King Lear's wife, Elmire, has been taken to the king's palace by a drunken cat, who tells her that the king has rescued her. Elmire tells the cat that she has been given three days of unconsciousness, during which time she has not been able to speak or move.
