The chapter opens with the narrator explaining that he is fully responsible for the events that have taken place between the three of them. He blames himself for everything that has happened. He says that he did not want things to get out of hand and that he does not want anything to come of it. He tells the story of how he missed out on his first love, who he thought was dead, and how he picked himself up and began a new life. He asks the narrator to tell him the reason why he never told her this. The narrator tells him that he knows her too well and that she is "aggressive and proud," but he is eager to control her. He wants a divorce
