When the narrator's mother brings him back to the family home, her husband doesn't like his daughter-in-law, but he loves her very much. The narrator tells us that his grandfather was a famous chef in the Ming dynasty, and he was studying under a star chef when he returned to China. He wanted to create a new brand of food in the country. Unfortunately, he never had sons to inherit his family's business, so he never got a chance to do so.
