This chapter opens with a conversation between Miss Jessel and Mariane. Mariane tells Mariane that she will not agree with her plan to marry into the Lu family, but Mariane says that she does not know what Mariane's plan is. She asks Mariane to calm her down and tells her to tell her that she is going to see what has happened. When Mariane asks if she should calm down, Mariane replies that she should not. She says she took Mariane in because she did not want to keep Mariane away from her family. She then tells her that Mariane has evil thoughts and that she thinks she is as evil as she is. The conversation ends with Mariane saying that she wants to know how long Mariane will be staying with her.
