In this chapter, we are introduced to a number of characters who have been introduced in the previous chapters. The first of these characters is named Agnes, and we learn that she is the daughter of a wealthy family. She is the mother of a young boy and a young girl. Agnes tells us that she was raised by her grandparents, and that she has always been a tomboy. She has always wanted to be a doctor, but her parents have refused to allow her to do so. Agnes asks her father if he would like her to marry him, and he tells her that he would, if she would only give up the baby. Agnes says that she would like to marry a rich man, but that her parents will not allow it. She tells her father that she loves him very much
