About This Chapter
The narrator tells the young woman that she's a good student, independent, and hardworking. She's not the only one who's going through a tough time, though, and that's why she has to deal with the death of her best friend. The narrator also tells the girl that her life isn't perfect, but that everyone's trying their best to make a better life for themselves and their families. The young woman, however, is the one who has caused the young man's death, and she deserves to be punished for it. She wants to know what the cause of his death is, and the narrator tells her that it's probably an overdose of IV drugs. The girl wonders why she can't be more rational about her feelings for the man she loves, and why she needs to be so careful not to be jealous of him. The two of them are in love, but they're not in love with each other. They're just competing to be the best at what they do. It's hard for the girl to be rational, because she doesn't want to be like the other girls, who don't care about anything and just "dash into the hard-won relationship" . She also wants to be more like the girl in the love scene, who just wants to "just dash into" the relationship, and leave the man with the excuse that it was "good for you." The girl says that she has learned a lot from shooting scenes with duola, but she'd like to get back to normal, so she can stop being
