About This Chapter
This chapter opens with a discussion of the upcoming performance of a play in London. The play will be performed by a group of students from each of the schools in the city. Each student will be given an opportunity to perform in front of a large audience. Each child will be asked to choose one of the students from his or her class to participate in the play. The teacher of the school where the play is to take place tells the students that the play will take place in his school, and that he has already chosen the student from the class he teaches. The child, named duola, has been chosen because she is the only student in her class who has been selected to participate. She is the daughter of a wealthy and powerful father, and she has been given the opportunity to play in the school because her father is a member of a group that organizes plays for children from all over the world. She has been awarded a first place in English and a third place in math. The other students in the class have also been selected for the play, and the teacher tells her that she will be the star of the show. She tells the children that she has worked very hard to get into the school, but that she does not have friends. She blames the teacher for her lack of friends, saying that she herself has worked hard all her life to give her the best things in life. She says that she wants friends, but she has no friends, because they do not respect her. She wants to be friends with people she likes, and there will be 140 buns for each great monk and one for each little monk
