About This Chapter
In this short scene, the audience is introduced to Mr. and Mrs. Song. Mr. Song's brother, Shuguang, explains that the Shuguang University Department of Academic Affairs has just announced that miao has been awarded a scholarship through the "Shui Foundation Scholarship." Shuguang explains that this scholarship is meant for students who are "excellent in character" and "academics." He tells the audience that zhishan, his boss, came to the Song family when he was a child to express his sympathy for his father, who had lost his job due to an accidental poisoning. Shuguang says that he can still feel the warmth of his uncle's kindness, even though he has never seen him since then. The audience is also introduced to Shuguang's uncle, who is described as "a middle-aged, fatty uncle," and who does not provide the students with the money they need to study hard. The narrator comments that Shuguang is "waytoo generous." He says that every year, "100 students are selected," and that he is too rich to be selected. He wants to see Shuguang in person.
