At the same time, the narrator realizes that he's going to die if he doesn't find his way back to the school. He pulls a candle holder out of his pocket and pulls out a painting of Mary that he thinks will mark the end of her life. The painting reminds him of his aunt, who died when he was a young child. The school is on fire, and the narrator is worried that the fire will kill him and his friend. He tries to put out the fire, but the smoke makes it impossible to do so. The rain stops them, and they decide to stay and wait out the storm.
