In this chapter, the monster breaks into the hospital and explains that he has been forced to participate in a game called "Hide-and-Seek." The game involves a girl in a red hat searching for mushrooms. If the girl does not find them, she will be killed. The monster says that he still has a wife and child waiting for him, but that no one has come to rescue him. He returns to the room where he and his wife have been hiding. He tells his wife that they are hiding in the storage room because there are "crazy people outside" who might have just given birth to a baby who died in the room. He asks the crowd to come out and find the "ugly one," who will be crowned "the ugliest one."
