The narrator explains that the amulet is supposed to help souls whose lives have been lost through suicide. The more dependent a person is on the amulet , the more souls they will absorb until they are reduced into a "puppet for the amulet" . It makes sense, then, that the students who commit suicide will also commit suicide because they will no longer be able to use their bodies.
