In this chapter, we are introduced to wanli, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Duan. We learn that she is often visited by her son, whom she calls "wanxuan" or "little brother." Worried that her uncle and aunt will find out that she has allowed someone else to sleep over, she begs them to let her stay for one night. She tells her son that he can sleep on the couch in her living room, but that he should sleep on his own bed. Worried about her son's safety, she tells him to eat some fried rice first, and then she will prepare his room for him.
