In this short scene, we are introduced to a young man named Duanfei, who has just returned from a night out with a business associate. He has just woken up from a dream in which he was sleeping with a "log" . He asks the business associate if he is awake. The business associate tells him that he is, but the young man does not believe him. The two are interrupted by the sound of a woman's voice outside the door. The young man asks the woman outside if she would like to have some drinks with him. She says that she would, but that she has a kimono for him so that she does not have to worry about him getting drunk and sleeping with her. He tells her that even if he loves her, they will not be able to have a future together because they are not from the same social class. He says that he has been in business for many years and that it would be a waste of their time alone if they just drank.
