The chapter opens with a conversation between the Governess and her brother. The Governess tells her brother that the man who introduced herself as her brother is "full of wariness" and that she will get rid of him from her sight. She also tells him that her mother was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and died a year later. Her stepfather was depressed and eventually sold her as a "juvenile bride" in exchange for her father's money and her future. She says that she is grateful to her father for saving her family and for paying for her education. She adds that she thought that she could live a "peaceful and content life" with her father. However, he was treating her "way too well" and did not treat her in an affectionate way. She tells her brothers that she has come to realize that he is ungrateful and that he should come home with her.
