The ferryman of Gokumonjo tells Sora that he is going to investigate rumors that a certain man is being held in the prison. Sora tells him to be quiet and to row him across the room. He says that prisoners have no rights and that he will suffer for his sins and be punished for his life. He tells him that the prison is called "earth ox 1718" and that the prisoner is Gonzo Gonda, who was convicted of mugging, attempted rape, and breaking away from prison once. He asks Sora what he did to end up at the prison, and he says that he had no idea that Gonzo was on death row. He wonders if he will see him again, and sora says that it looks like rumors are true. He then asks what happened to Gonzo, and says that his memory is fuzzy lately, so he can't remember what he had done. He thinks that he has a natural tendency to lose his memory, and goes on to say that he didn't know that he was being held for a crime, and that it was outrageous that he would worry about Gonzo. He also says that the door is so thick that he couldn't figure out what he was talking about.
