About This Chapter
In this short scene, we learn that orochi has been living in the forest for hundreds of years, and that she has been unable to communicate with the spirits of humans because of the barrier she has built between her and the land. She has been able to communicate only through the use of "gooey eyes" , which are the eyes of a person who has been eaten by another. This is the first time we've seen her make googly eyes, and it's clear that she's been eating humans instead of the spirit of the forest, which is why she can't communicate with humans. She says that she wants to die, but that she doesn't want to hurt the children, so she restrains orochi and tells him to hurry up and get away from the forest. She tells him that he's supposed to be a shield, so he should swallow his tears, and throw away all of his weakness. She was the first to see him as a person, and she was the one who was able to help him when he was dying. He tells her that he wants to protect the forest with his last breath, and he tells her to take care of the orochis for him. He says that now that he has fulfilled his duty, he has no reason not to keep them.
