In this chapter, we are introduced to the new sheriff, Concepcion, and his assistant, Tolliver. The two men discuss how important it is for them to find and kill the murderer, and they decide that they need to move quickly. They decide to go to the back door of the kitchen and whisper to each other that there is a back door to the kitchen that creaks open. Con tells them that the other sheriffs are checking the toilet and that they should search everywhere for the killer. Con, however, does not know where the other two men are, so he cannot confirm their whereabouts. He tells them he will be at the safehouse in 20 minutes and that he will report back to them. Con is surprised to learn that one of the other men was a partner in the escape. He would have beaten up the other four policemen. Con says that since they have been together for so long, he is more used to the situation now.
